Building resilience

“Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient.”

— Steve Maraboli

Very few (and I doubt that there even are) historical and even present-day people that we now acknowledge as great minds because of the incredible feats of achievements they made in their niche had it easy for them. Most of them had to work in the face of adversaries, failed, repeated, failed again, and it went on and on until they arrived at their aimed goals. And that is why we quote most of them, not really for their findings, but their resilience. Take Thomas Edison, for example, the world now uses LED and fluorescent lights, but we will always quote him whenever we need the inspiration to move on after failing.

One might say, must we fail before we become successful?

Now, don’t get me wrong, if you are excellent at playing the cards that life deals you with, then most of your victories will require relatively less effort than other people, and that’s what working smart is. But what of the times that working smart doesn’t make the cut, where you have to deal with failure? That is where resilience becomes relevant, and here are a few ways you can go about it:

Start with a positive attitude towards what you plan to do. Optimism and all other forms of positive mindsets are crucial in trying times and in the face of failure because they are what will keep you determined and focused on the price of achieving your goals, and not necessarily how to get there.

After a positive attitude, you will need the right tools because they are crucial in getting you to where you’re going. It’s fair enough to believe that you can make it to Everest’s top, but it’d be unwise to think that you can achieve such a feat in summer clothes and sunglasses. With the right tools, which are not only materials in this case, but also knowledge and expertise, and the right people who can and will support you at every stage, you are good to go.

Now, believing that something can happen and that you can do it are two different things, bringing us to the last part that makes everything worth it; believing in yourself. If you do or don’t, you are right either ways, but which will yield the result you want?
